The Five Fastest Offset Printing Presses in the World

Modern technology has produced some extremely fast printing presses.  Here is a list of the five fastest offset printing presses in the world.  They all produce over 20 finished magazines or newspapers every second.  If we get technical, deciding which press is truly the fastest is quite subjective as my conclusion shows, but here are a few definite contenders.

1.)  Man Roland Lithoman - 100,000 Copies Per Hour

Copies per second: 28
Web speed:  3000 fpm
Cylinder revolutions per hour: 50,000
Capacity: Double circumference / double width

Though some printers have removed the governor and made it go a little faster, here is a video of one in production at 100,000 copies per hour.

2.  Goss 3000 Sunday Press - 100,000 Copies Per Hour

Goss Sunday Press
Copies per second:  28
Web speed:  3,000 feet per minute
Cylinder revolutions per hour: 50,000
Capacity: Double circumference / double width / gapless / pinless folder

Since inheriting a fantastic product from Heidelberg, Goss has wedged back into the already tight commercial market.  Goss continues to be a staple provider and support for newspaper printing as well.

3. KBA Compacta X18 Press - 90,000 Copies Per Hour

KBA Compacta

Copies per second: 25
Web speed:  15 m/s (2,953 f/min)
Cylinder revolutions per hour: 45,000
Capacity: Double circumference / double width

4. Mitsubishi Diamondstar - 90,000 Copies Per Hour

Copies per second: 25
Web speed: 15 m/s
Cylinder revolutions per hour: 45,000
Capacity: Double circumference / double width

5.  Wifag Oetwil - 70,000 Copies Per Hour

Copies per second: 25
Web speed:  2,900
Cylinder revolutions per hour:  35,000
Capacity:  Double circumference / double width

Saying which press is fastest is very subjective.  Some may say feet per minute determines speed.  Others may say it is the copies per hour.  Still other may say that the page count must be considered.  All these factors play a role in determining speed, so this list of 5 is subject to debate.  Additionally, a press may split a single impression into two copies, doubling the copies per hour as the above examples show.  This can be deceiving when determining speed.  Whatever your method of determining which is the fastest, 3,000 feet per minute seems like the current barrier to break out of.
